Joyce Adhiambo, 21, finished secondary school in Kibera but could not afford college fees. She joined Garden of Hope's three-month Leadership Development and Entrepreneurship programme, which included a "500 bob challenge" — testing a business idea with minimal capital.
Joyce learned to make liquid soap and launched her own business, now producing around 20 litres a week. Increased demand for hand-washing during the COVID-19 pandemic boosted her sales.
"You can always find other means to support yourself and save to further your education," she advises other young people, and she hopes one day to open a shop selling soap-making ingredients.
